My son had a few reservations about making that move to Houston because it meant that I would be in Chicago without a man around the house. At one point during a conversation he said, “Mom, my life would be complete if you were down here in Houston.”

I let him know that I wouldn’t ever want him to split his time between his Mama and his woman. When the grandbabies come, then I’ll make that trip.

He became a “grill master,” teasing us with photos of scrumptious meals. Shifting to a low-to-no carb diet led him to losing a nice amount of weight. I believe that had a positive impact when he was later hit with a health challenge that could have been much worse if he hadn’t dropped those excess pounds.

While on a live Zoom event called, Love is an Inside Job, I received a text from my son’s beloved that said, “I’m rushing J. L. to the hospital.” My entire world came to a standstill and I tried to regroup because I was in the middle of the event. I let the guests and panelist know about the text I received and all of the panelists immediately went into prayer. One by one … Janice M. Allen (author of Growth), Janine A. Ingram (author of Born to Be Rich), Rev. Renee Sesvalah Cobb-Dishman (author of Speak it into Existence), Betty Clawson (author of If You Didn’t Have it In You, You Wouldn’t See it In Me), and Florenza Denise Lee (author of Purpose)—and more went into a tag team of amazing and powerful prayers for J.L’s healing and for God to come in and do a miraculous work. I made it through the event, but I have to be honest with you … I was not all right.

Because of travel restrictions at that time, I couldn’t hop on a plane and be with him. And though I know the prayers were surrounding him, anxiety crept in from time to time. At one point, his life flashed before my eyes—all the beautiful parts of it. From childhood to the present day. I even pictured him in that hospital bed all alone and thought, “I hope they are doing the best by him and don’t think he’s worth more in parts.”

Yes, it was that low for me thinking they would let him die so they could harvest his organs.
